Just like you, the first thing I did was go online and look for a place to sell them. The problem was the search results were overwhelmingly more chaotic than on my DVD shelf. Only if there was an organised set of information to guide me through the process. Lucky for you, here it is.
Is it worth selling them online?
First things first. Before going ahead, it is better to know how much you may gain from it. This would obviously depend on the content of the DVDs. But can also depend on where you are selling them. It is all about choosing the right platform. On average, they sell between Rs 200 – Rs 2000. Now that we have the monetary motivation covered, let’s move on to the next step.
Which is the right platform?
It can be a tedious task to sign up on all platforms and go through the trial-and-error method. So, here are a few suggestions to make it easy for you.
Declutter – Fastest by process
This is the go-to site if you are looking for easy exchange and spending a lot of time and effort. The process is extremely simple. First, you sign up on the app, supported by both Android and iOS. Second, you scan the barcode on the DVD or enter the number to list your item. Third, sit back and relax. As soon as the sale goes through, a shipping label is generated. And the payment to your chosen medium (credit card/bank transfer/PayPal) is initiated. The best thing about this site is that the shipping cost is not charged to you. The added advantage is also a high score on Trustpilot.
OLX – Community-based
This is the best option to sell within your community. Allows a greater advantage to finding buyers of common interests and lowers the shipping cost and hassle. All you need to do is signup with your location code and start listing items. This app also ensures fair transactions and direct conversations/negotiations with the buyer. The disadvantage is the site has one too many negative reviews on Trustpilot.
eBay – High on demand
This site is said to be the most on-demand for DVDs. The listing on eBay is done by uploading pictures and writing item descriptions. This is considered the safest place to buy and sell second-hand products. But due to greater demand, there is also greater competition. The best way to make sure your item is listed on top is by pricing competitively and providing as much description as possible (both visual and verbal).
Facebook Marketplace – Easy contact
This is an unconventional choice. But Facebook is also a good option to sell locally. The shipping is again free. The only thing to keep in mind is reading and agreeing to the guidelines listed for each item. Most commonly, sellers meet buyers in person or arrange a drop-off as per convenience. Facebook is also a common platform used by the generation that would own a DVD. So, it is easier to find people of common interests. However, proceed with caution as user reviews warn about scammers and fake accounts.
There is no one right way of doing this. It is all about having enough information to make the choice most suitable for you. But keep in mind, the above options are considered most popular among users and recommended only in particular for DVDs. Also, here are answers to some frequently asked questions on the internet.
What about selling them offline?
Why not? This can be a more trustworthy option. But the downside takes twice the effort of personally going from shop to shop. The best place to consider would be the collectible CD stores and rented DVD stores (if they still exist).
What if the quality has gone down?
This tends to happen over the years. Just make sure it is not so bad that it is not worthy of use anymore. Also, make sure to communicate the same with the buyer to not violate any trust guidelines.
Is it legal to make money selling an old DVD?
Absolutely, yes. As long as the DVD was acquired legally in the first place, of course.
Can I also sell video game CDs?
Yes, the process remains the same. The platforms suggested above also still hold good. Only the buyer segment may differ.
